Bikram Choudhury, founder of Bikram's Yoga College of India, World Headquarters, Los Angeles, California, began learning Hatha yoga at the age of three in Calcutta, India. At age five, he began studying with Bishnu Ghosh, one of the great physical culturists of our time. At the age of eleven, he was the youngest contestant ever to win the national India Yoga Competition and at fourteen he was declared "King of the Yogis."
As a young man he became a top cyclist, marathon runner and an international weight lifter. When Bikram was seventeen, a weightlifting accident shattered his knee. Leading European doctors told him he would never walk again. Not accepting their pronouncement, Bikram returned to his former teacher, Bishnu Ghosh, in an attempt to rehabilitate his knee. Six months later, his knee had totally recovered. Bishnu then commissioned Bikram to travel to Japan to begin sharing Hatha yoga with others.
In a United Nations sponsored research project, conducted at Tokyo University in Tokyo, Japan, Bikram helped doctors substantiate yoga’s viability to regenerate tissues and relieve the symptoms of many chronic ailments. Combining Eastern discipline with Western medicine, Bikram perfected his comprehensive yoga system making it suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
Bikram arrived in the United States in 1973 at the invitation of President Nixon. He quickly became the foremost yoga teacher in the West as celebrities, athletes, and others began to pursue Bikram's style of yoga.
Since then Bikram’s system of Hatha yoga has contributed to the healing of thousands of students at his studio in Los Angeles. Traveling the world and commissioning thousands of Bikram yoga teachers, Bikram has brought the benefits of his style of yoga to millions of students. He currently teaches at his Los Angeles studio and offers a teachers training courses twice a year.
