Teaching yoga came as a surprise to both of us. As a neuromuscular therapist, I knew the importance of stretching and regular exercise, but due to the stress of maintaining a full-time practice and day-trading full-time, a fitness routine was the last thing on my mind – the problem was that I really knew better. It wasn't until my wife, Jennifer, had come across Bikram's yoga that I was willing to consider adding one more thing to my life.
Jennifer, a CPA, was in the middle of a company merger when the stress of her job got the best of her – as a result of her continued stress, Jen’s health continued to decline. With a compromised immune system, she began to suffer from repeated upper-respiratory infections which later evolved into a bad case of pneumonia. Fatefully for Jen, and me, a good friend of Jen’s invited her to take her first Bikram class! After taking just a few classes, Jen began to feel significantly better and seemed better able to manage her “work related stress."
After observing the steady improvement in Jen’s overall health and fitness, and with a little encouragement (okay, a lot of encouragement), I finally took my first class. While challenging, I found the Bikram series to be amazing. After my third class, a chronic neck pain that I had lived with for a year was gone! It was then that I realized what a powerful tool Bikram's yoga could be in healing the body. Two weeks after my first class, I met with Mike and Joani Winters (the studio owners of Bikram Yoga, Houston), to lay out the path to become a future studio owner. Six months later I attended Bikram’s Teachers Training program in Los Angeles, CA, in September 2002. The following year, Jennifer put the corporate world on hold and followed the same path.
Upon our return to Houston, Jen and I had the privilege to teach for Bikram Yoga, Houston. We are thankful for Mike and Joani, not only for the opportunity to teach in their studios, but also for learning about the various aspects of running a Bikram studio. Jen and I are both excited about teaching and sharing Bikram’s yoga with those who live in the North Houston area.
